Huang Guoquan

Huang Guoquan, teacher of traditional Chinese painting at Eden Social Welfare Foundation
Personal Profile
Huang Guoquan was born in Yunlin, Taiwan in 1953. He graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts in 1976. In junior high school, he began his pursuit of art under the guidance of teacher Chen Cheng. In high school, in addition to teacher Chen Cheng, under the guidance of teachers Jiang Qingrong and Yao Hao, a comprehensive foundation of both Chinese and Western painting was established. In order to grow oneself during the semester, any data that is helpful for learning is never left behind. In the era of information scarcity
The 'Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual' has become my learning treasure. Especially the mountains, rocks, and trees of the 'Four Kings', Tang Yin's brushwork and ink painting, and Song Huizong's flowers and birds They are often templates that I spontaneously learn and copy.
After entering the art school, under the guidance of dozens of renowned teachers such as Li Qimao, Su Fengnan, and Fu Zhuanfu, he embarked on a new journey of learning, regardless of mountains, waters, flowers, freehand brushwork, and meticulous brushwork Always hold an attitude of learning whenever there is teaching, attending whenever there is class, and asking whenever there is doubt, humbly pursuing one's own goals. In the study room, I always remember the teacher's saying, 'Preparing for competitions is the best way to motivate personal growth.' Therefore, I will never give up easily in any competition or exhibition. I will do my best and give it my all. The requirement for the work is to never give up until the ideal is achieved, only to redraw without compromise.
I remember the words that our teacher often encouraged us, 'The fruit of success is for those who stand under the stage for a long time.' There are no shortcuts, no opportunities, only perseverance. So watching more, thinking more, and drawing more has become a reflection of my student life.
However, in order to broaden my horizons and enrich my painting materials, obtaining and researching through photography is my top priority after painting. Anything that is beneficial to painting, such as mountains, rivers, birds, animals, grass, and trees, is the subject of my photography. Because in terms of painting philosophy, I insist on not painting what I have never seen before, and only by seeking its truth can I obtain its essence.
With the advancement of technology and the advent of the digital age, virtual digital ink painting has been launched in the Chinese world since 1998, using the Painter painting software to simulate the brushwork of Eastern painting in the virtual world of computers. This initiative has also received high recognition from various sectors.
In the field of personal painting, based on years of learning traditional concepts, integrating Western aesthetic concepts, and applying the characteristics of Chinese and Western media to express personal thinking in a modern environment, without violating the basic spirit of ink painting, we aim to achieve a state where nature is the spirit, the external teacher is the source of inspiration, and the soul is the refuge. In this field of art where there are abundant talents and a hundred schools of thought contend, only I can make my own path and walk on my own. Therefore, the stillness from the depths of my soul, the emptiness at the end of my consciousness, and the spirit washed away by ink and brush are the souls I use to interweave my images.
Excerpt from the words of Mr. Liu Jianzhong, a renowned ink painter of today: 'In the past, literati were like carved dragons in their writings, and their works were described as objects, appearing and disappearing, constantly changing, and skillfully crafted...' Although praising the truth, this is the goal I have been striving for.
